Personal Security
There are many ways to tell if your personal information is being used by someone else for criminal reasons. You might see a discrepancy in your credit report, credit card statements, or bank accounts. You might even receive bills that aren't yours, or get calls about debts that you don't owe.
If you see suspicious activity, you can follow these steps from IdentityTheft.gov to help limit the damage:
- Call the companies where you know fraud occurred
- Place a fraud alert on your credit reports and get copies of your report
- Report ID theft to the FTC
- File a report with your local police department
Next, take a deep breath and begin to repair the damage. Your next step might be closing accounts opened in your name, or reporting fraudulent charges to your credit card company.
If your info is lost or stolen, you can go to https://www.identitytheft.gov/Info-Lost-or-Stolen to find out what your next steps are based on the information you've lost.
